I have a lot of love for the Honey Love 3-in-1. She is the first product I made for Leahlani, and still remains a favorite and my personal ‘holy grail’ to help keep my skin clear, healthy and happy. Our Honey Love has received thousands of love letters over the past 7 years. While she is wonderful for all skin types, she is exceptional for oily and blemish prone skin.
So what is the Honey Love and what makes her so special? She is a 3-in-1 cleanser, mask and exfoliator — a multi tasking superhero. Her versatility is what makes her so special, and her ingredients are what make her magical. Since I love magic, lets talk about hers.
It is no secret that Honey is my favorite ingredient in skincare. Why? Because its skin benefits are endless. Raw honey is naturally antiseptic and antimicrobial, helping to thoroughly cleanse the skin and dissolve bacteria. Honey also contains gluconic acid, a mild alpha hydroxy acid that helps to brighten the skin, even the complexion and fade age spots. Raw honey is loaded with a vast array of nutrients, such as vitamin B, manganese, iron, potassium and calcium. Once mixed with water, honey will release a peroxide property which helps to heal acne and impede bacterial growth. Raw honey contains mild alpha hydroxy acids that help to brighten the complexion and even the skin tone-helping to diminish scarring and age spots. Honey is a humectant, drawing moisture to the skin and replenishing it with an abundance of nutrient dense enzymes. If your skin is acne prone-honey is where it its at to help clear your complexion.
I personally create my own blend of raw honey from local honey sources in Hawaii. I absolutely love this process- and anyone who has spent time with me in the studio can attest this :) It’s my own personal sweet heaven.
Wildcrafted maqui berry is one of the worlds most powerful superfoods, containing the highest levels of antioxidants amongst all fruits. The antioxidants contained in this berry have an extra molecule of oxygen, which help to quickly combat the effects of free radical damage while reducing inflammation and protecting cell membranes.
- Organic noni fruit is antibacterial and anti-inflammatory and contains high levels of antioxidants. Noni contains vitamin A, vitamin C, niacin, iron, calcium, sodium, magnesium and potassium. This particular fruit is very versatile, almost every part of the noni tree can be used in various forms of cooking, herbal remedies, supplements and medicinal ointments. Noni is a natural emollient, and helps to smooth and rejuvenate the skin.
- Organic hibiscus flower: We use the red ‘roselle’ hibiscus flower. This particular flower has been dubbed the “Botox plant” because of it's firming and lifting abilities on the skin. Hibiscus contains natural AHA which can help speed cellular renewal, mildly exfoliate the skin and control acne breakouts. Hibiscus helps to strengthen elasticity and moisturize the skin, and the presence of anthocyanocides help to make the pores appear smaller due to its astringent properties.
- Organic lavender flowers evoke a sense of peace and calm to our skin and well being. Lavender is antibacterial and anti fungal, and helps to sooth the skin and calm inflammation. Lavender also has a balancing effect on the skin, and will help regulate oil control.
- Rose clay is full of iron oxides, which give it that beautiful rosey color. Rose clay provides mild exfoliation and helps increase circulation, regenerates collagen and elastin while promoting new cell growth. Rose clay also helps reduce inflammation, tighten pores and helps to fade hyper pigmentation.
And last but certainly not least, her crystals. Corundum microdermabrasion crystals are made from the second hardest mineral known to science. The crystals are ground to a very fine powder and they do not have any jagged edges, so they will not ‘tear’ skin cells like traditional exfoliators. Corundum has bacteria-killing properties and helps to clear the skin, and rinses off clean-without being absorbed into the skin.
There is a lot of information out there about exfoliating-to do or not to do? And if so, how often? In esthetician school, I was trained to inform my clients not to exfoliate more then two times a week. What I discovered in my years as an esthetician is that everyones skin is different, each with individual needs. For instance, my skin requires a gentle exfoliation 3-4 times a week to stay clear and happy. The beauty of the Honey Love is that it is a manual exfoliator, so you can control the pressure you use. I recommend using very gentle pressure. There are areas that you can be a little more aggressive, such as the sides of the nose and the upper forehead area, as these areas tend to become more congested then other areas on the face.
A good way to determine if your skin is in need of exfoliating is by doing the fingertip test. Make sure your skin is clean and very dry. Using your fingertips, gently glide them across your face and really 'feel' your skin, connect with the texture. Our fingertips are very sensitive and they are our own personal ‘feelers’. If your skin is ready for a gentle exfoliation, you will feel areas of congestion (generally around your T-Zone). You may choose to spot-exfoliate these areas if your skin is more on the sensitive side, this works exceptionally well.
What makes the Honey Love so special is that she is formulated with an abundance of anti-inflammatory and hydrating ingredients, which is truly important for an exfoliating product to have. After you are done gently exfoliating your skin, simply leave her on for a few minutes as a mask so that she can calm and hydrate your skin, alleviating redness and drawing moisture to the surface of the skin.
Here is the full ritual:
Remove all eye makeup before use. For maximum benefits, cleanse first with Bless Balm or Kalima Cleansing Powder.
As a cleanser/mask: Moisten face with warm water. Massage a small amount of Honey Love to your face in gentle, circular motions. Wait 3-5 minutes and rinse well with warm water. You may also choose to apply a dollop of Honey Love to the palm of your hand and add a few drops of water, emulsify with your fingertips until you reach a desired consistency, then gently massage into your face.
As an exfoliator/mask: Moisten face with warm water. Stir the jar well, as the crystals will settle at the bottom. Apply a small amount of Honey Love to your face and gently massage into your skin for 1-2 minutes in circular motions. Focus on areas where you may have congestion (around the nose etc) and give your lips a gentle scrub as well. Leave on for 3-5 minutes and rinse well with warm water. Finish by splashing your face with cool water. (Start by exfoliating the skin 1-2x a week and see how your skin resonates).
Its time to show your skin some Honey Love!
